Welcome to AMP presents ELEVEN, our 11th Season Performance. On behalf of AMP’s Artists and Board of Directors, we are thrilled to share this time and space with you for a very special performance weekend.
If you are familiar with Alternative Motion Project, then you know each show we perform is wonderfully unique. This show is no different and reflects the distinct perspectives of our Guest Choreographers: Khary Jackson, Brianna Rae Johnson, and Zoë Koenig (AMP Company Member). I am also thrilled to welcome back long-time collaborator and award-winning Sound Artist Dameun Strange. We are working on an ambitious new work that we will continue to research and develop, with another iteration performed in November 2023. We are also celebrating a milestone for one of our company members: this performance marks 10 years Jesse Schmitz-Boyd has been an AMPer.
I encourage you to consider the questions the artists pose. May you get lost in these four worlds that embody their own physical, visual, and conceptual perspectives within the broad umbrella that is contemporary dance. These works are sustained by the dynamic, collaborative, and curious movers that make up AMP’s company. It is truly a full collective effort, supported by our fabulous and creative tech team, Karin Olson (Lighting Designer) and Julie Marie Muskat (Stage Manager).
One of our core values as an organization is collaboration: amongst our artists, between our artists and audiences, and between AMP and the Twin Cities community at large. This is why we have brought back our Audience Create-A-Dance which included a survey where community members voted on frameworks for Zoë’s new work (if you missed out, make sure you are on our email list and follow us on social media!). Lastly, with your presence as an audience member here today, you become an AMP collaborator and an integral part of the artistic process.
Thank you for being here and for what you bring to this community.
We hope you enjoy ELEVEN!
With Gratitude,
Joanna Lees

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS + LINKS
We acknowledge that we are performing in a venue that was built on stolen land of the Dakota and Anishinaabe Indigenous peoples: Mni Sota Makoce, Land Where the Waters Reflect the Clouds.
Acknowledging the suffering and violence of settler colonialism and its devastating multi-generational impact is one way we can begin to dismantle this legacy and better honor the land on which we create and perform. Indigenous communities are not simply relics of the past: Indigenous traditions are still active, alive and relevant today.
We encourage you to join us in the commitment to deepening this work. Consider learning more about Indigenous history, the Mni Sota Makoce Honor Tax, and other reparative actions that can be taken to dismantle the repercussions of settler colonialism where we live by visiting the following links:

**************************
As part of an ongoing, long-term call to action, we encourage AMP audience members to join us in our long term support of the Black-led organization, Juxtaposition Arts. Juxtaposition Arts is a black led arts organization serving the Northside of Minneapolis and “is a teen-staffed art and design center, gallery, retail shop, and artists’ studio space in North Minneapolis. Juxtaposition Arts develops community by engaging and employing young urban artists in hands-on education initiatives that create pathways to self-sufficiency while actualizing creative power."
"JXTA welcomes people to commit to long-term support which is essential to address the long-term funding inequalities that black led organizations face in Minnesota and the nation. JXTA values are centered on self-determination and youth empowerment encased within a social enterprise business model. We have worked with, educated, and trained emerging artists of color for 26 years through this lens." - Allison Wagstrom, JXTA, statement from 6/8/21
This is one avenue of AMP's ongoing work recognizing and dismantling systemic racism and white supremacy. We encourage you to check out the valuable work JXTA is doing and join us in monetarily supporting their mission, if you are able. JXTA has a Capital + Legacy Campaign where you can also make a recurring donation.

Using the Salvador Dalí artwork Duel in the sun (1973), a graph, and variables selected by AMP community members as parameters, Duel Duel Revolution stages the showdowns and reverie born of shared music landscapes. The work considers the choreography of video game combat, the earnestness of underground dance music, and the spectator sport of arcade performance as it finds expression within and outside of preprogrammed movement.

This work combines concepts relating to black holes, dream states, multiverses, and theta waves to explore humanity’s infinite origins and potential. How can we understand our inherent connection to (and within) a vast and mysterious cosmic universe?
