AN ANNOUNCEMENT FROM CO-DIRECTOR, Kristin Howe

Dear AMP Community,
It is with a heavy heart that I share with you that I will be stepping away from my role as Co-Artistic Director of Alternative Motion Project at the end of its 2021-2022 season. My final day as Co-Artistic Director will be August 31st, 2022. Being a Founder and Director of this organization, along side my dear friend and artistic partner, Joanna Lees, has been an intricate force in who I am today.
AMP was founded on the value of providing meaningful and professional opportunities to dance artists and that is exactly what AMP has given me. The opportunity of being a leader for this organization has taught me many significant lessons, both in administration development and artistic creative growth.
I do not make this decision lightly! AMP is so much more than a small non-profit dance company – AMP is a family. I am honored to have served this organization for the past decade and look forward to see what changes and growth evolve in the near future. I want to thank everyone that has shared their time, energy, artistry, and dedication to both myself and the organization as a whole. I am overwhelmed with pride and joy as I move towards my next chapter.
I will always be connected to AMP and the community for which it serves. I look forward to continuing to support the organization and remind myself, that Move BIG is more than a tag line, it’s a philosophy that I commit to live by.
Let’s join together and celebrate this new venture and AMP’s 10th Year this upcoming March 18th - 20th at The Southern Theater! I am excited to share my last premiere work with you that explores where and how we find JOY. I have found a magnitude of JOY during my time with AMP. Thank you for your compassion, understanding, and support!
With Gratitude,
Kristin Howe

AMP's Statement RegardinG Systemic Racism
Since we were last in touch with our supporters, protests and unrest have emerged because of the unjust deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and countless more. We join in the ongoing grief over their preventable and predictable tragedies and we stand in solidarity with the Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities and all those who seek justice, equity, and love.
Black Lives Matter.
We want to recognize that AMP is a predominantly white organization participating in and promoting a Western, Euro-centric art form that is historically tied to white supremacist ideas. We have an eternity of work to do in recognizing and dismantling the structural ways we are perpetuating racism simply by existing in these systems. It is not enough to be not racist - but to be actively anti-racist. We commit to a continual process of listening, learning, understanding, empathizing and acting and we invite you to join us in this work.
Below are some select resources that we have personally found helpful.
There are numerous resources available and this is simply one place to start.
How does systemic racism manifest in dance?
Read Recognizing Systemic Racism in Dance by Alicia Mullikin.
As a white person, where can I find an organized list of things to watch, read, listen to
in aiding my anti-racist work?

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO MOVE BIG?
Move BIG is more than a tagline- it is AMP's philosophy. Move BIG means more than the large and virtuosic movement that Howe and Lees have been known for. Move BIG is advancing the art form of dance in any way we can. Whether it is through our choreography and performances, collaborations with other artists, engaging audience members, or education and exposure to those in need, we can come together as a community and acknowledge that we serve a purpose that is greater than ourselves.
