AMP presents our First Screendance Film,
What Never Was

After our 9th Season Performance was canceled in March, 2020, we returned to The Lab theater to reimagine our creative work in AMP's first-ever Screendance film. As solos, each dancer investigated improvisations prompted by AMP's Number Nine Choreographers (Kristin Howe, Joanna Lees, Erinn Liebhard, + Brenna Mosser).

Collaborating with V. Paul Virtucio (Cinematographer) and Tony Stoeri (Lighting Designer), the dancers explore the hidden parts of the theater that you may not see in a typical performance. More about the work and the process here.

AMP's Statement RegardinG Systemic Racism

Since we were last in touch with our supporters, protests and unrest have emerged because of the unjust deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and countless more. We join in the ongoing grief over their preventable and predictable tragedies and we stand in solidarity with the Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities and all those who seek justice, equity, and love. Black Lives Matter.

We want to recognize that AMP is a predominantly white organization participating in and promoting a Western, Euro-centric art form that is historically tied to white supremacist ideas. We have an eternity of work to do in recognizing and dismantling the structural ways we are perpetuating racism simply by existing in these systems. It is not enough to be not racist - but to be actively anti-racist. We commit to a continual process of listening, learning, understanding, empathizing and acting and we invite you to join us in this work.

Below are some select resources that we have personally found helpful.
There are numerous resources available and this is simply one place to start.

How does systemic racism manifest in dance?
Read Recognizing Systemic Racism in Dance by Alicia Mullikin.

As a white person, where can I find an organized list of things to watch, read, listen to
in aiding my anti-racist work?

Check out the Anti-Racism Resources for White People.

What is systemic racism?

WELCOME TO ALTERNATIVE MOTION PROJECT!

Alternative Motion Project (AMP)
is a professional dance company passionately striving to create accessible, entertaining, and meaningful dance work throughout the Twin Cities area. Driven by the creative process, AMP gives an alternative dance performance experience to both audience and performer alike by creating a welcoming and inclusive environment.  AMP increases communications between performer and audience member through an array of materials and discussions.  AMP also encourages its company members to continually grow in their levels of training through quality dance performance of the choreography by its founders as well as collaborations by other up-and-coming artists. Committed to increasing dance exposure and education for people of all artistic backgrounds, AMP provides workshops, residencies, and performances based on the community’s specific needs.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO MOVE BIG?

Move BIG is more than a tagline- it is AMP's philosophy. Move BIG means more than the large and virtuosic movement that Howe and Lees have been known for. Move BIG is advancing the art form of dance in any way we can. Whether it is through our choreography and performances, collaborations with other artists, engaging audience members, or education and exposure to those in need, we can come together as a community and acknowledge that we serve a purpose that is greater than ourselves.
