What Never Was

What Never Was (2020) is a 9 minute work made to honor and reimagine the creative work of Alternative Motion Project’s canceled 9th Season Performance. While this film draws inspiration from the work  that never got to see the stage, we did not set out to simply recreate choreography that already existed and put it on camera. We wanted to build a new creation that has its own unique identity.

A message about the work......

Six and a half months ago, the entire world as we had experienced it changed with the COVID19 pandemic - and Alternative Motion Project was no exception. Two weeks before we were to go into the Lab theater for our 9th Season Performance, AMP was forced to cancel our show out of the interest of public health and the safety for our artists. 5 months of rehearsals, work, planning, investment and collaboration never met its culminating moment --- to see the stage nor an audience. Needless to say, we were all heartbroken.

As the pandemic has continued to rage on, dance artists are still facing unique and devastating challenges. For How do we move together w/ physical distancing and other major limitations in a form that is based in the collective physical experience? How and where can dance exist in this pandemic terrain? Needless to say, It’s been a bizarre and, at times, very lonely landscape for all of us to navigate.

We wanted to find a way to honor the artists and the work from the past year in the safest way possible and we were able to achieve this through the creation of a screendance film.

We brought together the choreographers of the show, the dancers, cinematographer V. Paul Virtucio, and lighting designer, Tony Stoeri to collaborate together as we returned to the Lab Theater in July to create and film.

While this film draws inspiration from the work  that never got to see the stage, we did not set out to simply recreate choreography that already existed and put it on camera. We wanted to build a new creation that has its own unique identity.

We hope you enjoy the film!
