Performed and videotaped May 2021 in studio for International Taoli online Chinese Dance Exhibition; awarded several prizes regionally and internationally for performance and choreography.
Choreographed during the height of the COVID19 lock down in Spring 2020 by Artistic Director Jinyu Zhou to lift spirits and stir empowering emotions for CAAM Chinese Dance Theater’s dancers this dance work was first videotaped for its Chinese New Year 2021 celebration held online and later in the studio for 2021 regional and international Chinese online dance exhibitions. “Reincarnation” is performed to a traditional Mongolian song combining rock and roll elements performed by a revered Mongolian music group, Hanggai Band. The dance work finds meaning for modern audiences through Jinyu Zhou’s interpretation of this Mongolian song reflecting the simplest aspect of nature and life including images in the lyrics of flying birds, flowers, sunshine, as well as the knowledge that the universe is external but youth is fleeting. |

Performed and videotaped January 2020 at the O’Shaughnessy Auditorium Part of a longer journey to Dunhuang, China the dance drama traces the travels of visitors from the US on a quest to find the power of the Guanyin. Travelling many miles through mountains and prairies of China to the Silk Road, then past Jiuquan, China on the rolling, dusty, and seemingly endless desert of Dunhuang, the visitors in our story find the Mogao Caves. Taking in the mysterious frescoes inside the caves the visitors experience the merciful thousand hands Guanyin/Avaokitesvara coming to life in many dimensions, filled with light and grace. Floating off the walls the figures defy time and space, increasing the power of its art - its search for beauty unending created by generations of artists in the Mogao Cave, now lasting through the centuries. |

Turkish dances are as varied as the music they are performed to and the costumes they are performed in. Since 2013, Ensemble members have travelled to Turkey yearly, and via Zoom since COVID, to study with Turkish dance professionals in order to learn from the source and bring true interpretations to Minnesota audiences. Dans Örnekleri (Dance Samples) is a compilation of excerpts of our Turkish Oryantal and Folk dances followed by a full theatrical performance of Çiçek Pasaji, the fun tale of a young Turkish Roma woman’s experiences during her first trip to the cafes and flower markets of 1920s Pera, Istanbul. |

We are part of Springboard for the Arts Incubator Program. The RadioBody project is a collaboration with local composer Mike Lauer exploring the jazz sensibilities and human toil and triumph embedded in the work of pioneering alt-electronic band Radiohead. Originally undertaken with a stage show in mind, we made a Covid-pivot to offer a first iteration of the project as a screendance, which we proudly premiered virtually in February 2021 with our home audience before submitting to dance film festivals across the world. So far, the work has been featured with the Rogue Dancer Film Festival (NC, USA) and Sans Souci Festival of Dance Cinema (CO, USA). We hope to bring the work to stage as a full-evening show including segments of this film work in late Winter 2023

Hatch Dance
Website: https://www.hatchdance.com/
Hatch Dance is a contemporary dance company based in Minneapolis. Founded in 2017 byChoreographer and Dancer Helen Hatch, Hatch Dance aims to bring together artists from the Twin Cities to create contemplative, collaborative performances that reveal emotional truths, speak to human commonalities, and engage audiences by encouraging a wider sense of belonging. We perform in theaters, unconventional spaces, and online to bring our work to as many people as possible.
Collaboration is the cornerstone of Hatch Dance’s productions. We have witnessed the power of a collaborative creative process between artists and how it manifests far beyond the performance. Through the deep listening necessary to make art and the trust that is developed, truths are shared and perspectives are altered. Since our founding we have partnered with dance companies (STRONGmovement, HoneyWorks), musicians (Poolboy, Seth Conover) and videographers (Noble Productions) resulting in performances that are enthusiastically received by critics and audiences alike. Our debut performance, Isotope, presented by The Southern Theater, was named a “2018 Top Ten Twin Cities Dance Performance” by the Star Tribune. Since then, we have been commissioned by The Cowles Center as part of their MERGES program, Saint Paul Ballet, Penelope Freeh, and Aveda.
In 2020, Hatch Dance and fellow dance company HoneyWorks joined forces to launch Live @ The Shed, which brought together dancers eager to share their gifts with an audience who yearned for live art in the midst of a pandemic. With its success, Live @ The Shed has grown into an annual outdoor dance event that culminates in the premiere of a new collaborative ensemble work that celebrates a large cast of dancers from the Twin Cities.
