Alternative Motion Project's 6th annual Performance
Collective Selves (Working Title; World Premiere- Jennifer Glaws, Guest Artist) – Made specifically for AMP’s company, this new work investigates the gradual, systematic, physical manifestation of “joining in” as a social phenomenon for an individual and group. The movement explores minimalistic gesture with athleticism, physicality in dance and a crescendo in complexity of movement.
HeartBeatRed (2015 - Kristin Howe)- In three sections, this piece explores the human heart’s physical and emotional existence, while focusing on the mechanics, weaknesses, and bondages of the ever-so-vital muscle. Includes original music performed live by local musician Dameun Strange (Strange New Music Experiment).
Lost in My Mind (2012 - Joanna Lees) – Joanna Lees brings back this collaboration with composer Dameun Strange that explores Alzeihmer’s and Dementia from the point of view of the person suffering from this debilitating disease. Created in two sections, this heart-wrenching piece explores the romantic bittersweet nostalgia of memory and the feelings of loneliness, confusion, frustration, relief, dependency, disorientation, fear, and love that come when experiencing ‘the long goodbye.’
This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
Alternative Motion Project (AMP) continues its commitment to create and present new contemporary dance work with its sixth annual performance, AMP#SIX. Enter a different world with each of the 5 pieces performed by this dynamic company that offers relentless physicality and dedicated artistry. Includes choreography by Guest Artist Jennifer Glaws (Minneapolis), live original music by composer Dameun Strange (St. Paul) and photography by Ellen Gustafson (Minneapolis).

Esprit De Corps (World Premiere - Kristin Howe)- Esprit De Corps (Group Spirit) follows eight individuals as they explore and challenge the idea of community. In an age where it is easy to disconnect, this dance work encourages human connections as the dancers leave their mark on each other - eventually moving forward as one unified group spirit. Howe also incorporates photograph projections by Ellen Gustafson in this piece.
Audience Create-A-Dance (World Premiere - Joanna Lees) – In August 2016, AMP audience members were given the chance to be directly part of the creative process. Nearly 50 of AMP’s patrons voted on the number of dancers (5), a color scheme (Black, Gray and Purple), a tactile quality (Fluid) and the theme they would like explored (Theme-less); these results are the framework for an entirely new work by Joanna Lees. One of the questions Lees will explore is how do we find meaning in a piece that began with simply movement for movement’s sake? Theme-less is not meaningless.
